Help Wanted

Looking for a way to get more involved with the swim team?

Join the Officials’ team!

Chesapeake Swim Club is looking for parent volunteers who are interested in training to become officials.

Can you officiate if you have never been a competitive swimmer?

Yes, many parents who officiate were not competitive swimmers.  The required clinic and the 8  on-deck training sessions provide you with the knowledge needed to officiate.

What is required to become certified as a stroke and turn judge?

You  need to complete the following:

1.  Attend one required Officials clinic

2.  Complete 8 on-deck training sessions, shadowing certified officials over at least 2 meets

3. Become a dues paying USA swimming member

4.  Take and pass the open book USA Swimming officials test

Re-certification is required every 2 years (retake the open book exam and attend an Officials’ clinic).

What is expected after I become certified?

To run a swim meet, we have to have a minimum number of officials.  We would hope that you would volunteer at each of the meets that we host.   In addition, Oklahoma Swimming expects officials to contribute at the State Championship meets (Division IIs and Age Group Meet, held during both Long Course and Short Course season).  Of course, CSC will give you service hours for volunteering at our meets and the state championship meets.    Typically, officials earn over and above the required service hours.  We also rely on officials to help at any meet they attend because we cannot run a sanctioned meet without officials.   And nobody wants their swimmer to earn a lifetime best time at a meet that isn’t sanctioned  (and therefore doesn’t count).

I’ m still not sure….who can I talk to about training to officiate?

Max McKnight –at OCCC

Gary Shuey – at OCCC

Tommy Robbins – at OCCC

Jocelyn Naik – at the LH

Todd Mauldin – at the LH

Ruth Ann Portman – at the LH

Kathy Dwyer – at the LH

The above named parents are all certified officials and can answer your questions.  Max and Gary have moved up the ranks and are starters/meet referees as well.

I think I might be interested, so what is the next step?

Plan to attend the Officials’ clinic on Saturday, July 10th at OCCC.  This will take place in between the morning and afternoon sessions.  You can also ‘shadow’ during one or more sessions that weekend.  If you are interested, please contact Max McKnight at themax@chickashachamber.com     or evenings at 222-2456.

What is the ‘uniform’ or dress code?

When on deck,  please wear a white collared shirt and navy shorts, pants, skirt, skort, capris.  NO denim/blue jeans are permitted.  You also need to wear white rubber soled shoes.
